If you have noticed my blog, I have replaced the popular posts widget with recent comments widget. This is because comments widget serves in two purpose.

The first one is, its easy to know which posts are actively responded by my visitors and hence new visitors will fell free to find those discussions and would like to respond to those comments

The second one is, a great advantage for my readers. When visitors comment on posts, they can find their name including the website and followed by comment. So, if people provide good comments and add their blog or site then when others read the comments there are many chances of making people visit your blog from that link after reading the comments. Hence its a good way for advertising your blog for free. Hence I would suggest you to comment on the posts which will indirectly provide traffic for your site.
